Turning 03, and you can hear it from the road
Looming Rocks Amphitheatre
Two rock faces, a stage between them, and a great deal of very old stone that was here long before the stage was.
Set amidst towering rock faces, Looming Rocks impose with their immense solidity. They give off an ancient and alive aura. Some say the rocks are sentient and full of lore from centuries of hosting storytellers and stages. They possess an unknowable intelligence that long pre-dates the humans drawn to them. The rocks saw the Sithen emerge, eons ago.
Why the rocks glow
The rocks are covered in lichen. In modern times, folks discovered that UV light made them fluoresce in a dazzling display. Charged during the day by a solar array with batteries, the stage production at Looming Rocks includes UV spots and floods that make the rocks glow at night.
The floods stand on the ground and point upwards, which is why everything out here is brightest at its foot and goes dark towards the top, and why there is nothing overhead at all. The lamps are violet. What comes back is not.
On the rocks tonight
Ten full shows, all of them recorded at the real place this one is fond of, and six of them posted by the artist or the band themselves. Nothing is fetched until you press something. The desk below moves along the bill without loading anything at all — you can read the whole running order, and every runtime on it, without a single request leaving this page. Once something is playing, the desk changes the picture instead, because by then you have asked for a stage.
THE STAGE IS DARK
The running order — ten acts, shortest 57 min, longest 2 hr 6 min
Every one says how long it runs before you press it, which matters more here than anywhere else on this street: these are whole concerts rather than songs. Nothing is hosted by us. Each is on somebody else’s channel and that channel is named.
-
ACT 01
Sierra Ferrell at Red Rocks, 2025
Sierra Ferrell · on Late Night Music · 1:52:23
A full show, shot from the crowd rather than from a truck, which is most of what makes it worth having: you get the rocks going up out of the light and the sound of a few thousand people being quiet in the right places. Ferrell sings old forms without treating them as a costume.
-
ACT 02
Sierra Ferrell at Red Rocks, 2026
Sierra Ferrell · on Late Night Music · 1:34:50
The same artist on the same stage a year on, which is the only pair in this running order and the reason both are here. Put them side by side and what you are watching is somebody who has played a room before deciding what to do with it the second time.
-
ACT 03
The Red Clay Strays, Live from Red Rocks, Volume 2
The Red Clay Strays · on Red Clay Strays · 2:05:42
The longest thing on the rocks by a quarter of an hour, and the band's own upload rather than somebody else's recording of them. Southern rock played without irony, which on this street is a compliment: see the room two turnings back about sincerity being harder to hold than a joke.
-
ACT 04
Slightly Stoopid at Red Rocks, 2021
Slightly Stoopid · on Slightly Stoopid · 1:47:10
August 2021, which places it: one of the first full houses back, and you can hear it in the crowd more than in the band. Reggae, dub and punk in the same set, from a group who have never seen a reason to pick.
-
ACT 05
Stevie Nicks: Live at Red Rocks, 1987
Stevie Nicks · on Amplified - Classic Rock & Music History · 0:56:55
The oldest thing here by nearly forty years, and the one that proves the rocks were doing this long before anybody in the running order above was born. A full concert film from the Rock a Little tour, shot on the same stone the rest of this list is standing on.
-
ACT 06
Mumford & Sons: The Road to Red Rocks
Mumford & Sons · on MumfordAndSonsVEVO · 0:57:15
The only one of these that is a film about arriving somewhere rather than a recording of a night, which is why it is last: the others are the show, and this one is the drive. Worth it for how plainly the band treat the place as the point of the trip.
-
ACT 07
Zach Bryan at Red Rocks, November 2022
Zach Bryan · on Zach Bryan · 1:37:42
On his own channel, which is worth saying because it means this one is not going anywhere. A very big room played quietly for long stretches, and the crowd does most of the work on the choruses without being asked to.
-
ACT 08
Billy Strings at Red Rocks
Billy Strings · on Billy Strings · 0:58:27
Just under the hour, and the one with the most notes in it by a wide margin. Bluegrass played at a speed that stops being about showing off somewhere in the second tune and turns into four people listening to each other very fast.
-
ACT 09
Shane Smith & the Saints at Red Rocks, 2023
Shane Smith & the Saints · on Shane Smith & the Saints · 1:40:05
Posted by the band as the complete version, which on this street counts for something: no fade at the interesting part and no edit where the tuning was. Fiddle out front, and a set built to be played outdoors at altitude.
-
ACT 10
The Revivalists at Red Rocks, 2022
The Revivalists · on The Revivalists · 1:43:02
A full show from a band with two drummers and a pedal steel, which is a lot of weather to move around a stage. New Orleans by way of a Colorado hillside, and the horns carry further out here than they have any right to.
The door policy at the foot of the rocks
- Tuning is not playing. While the stage is dark, previous and next are silent — the screen names the act and its runtime and nothing is fetched. You can walk the whole bill without a single request leaving the page. Once something is on, the desk changes the picture instead.
- Every control says how long before you press it, and the desk names the act it is about to move to as well. The shortest thing here is nearly an hour. Nobody should find out the length of a thing after committing to it.
- The bill is a list and not a verdict. Nothing here is ranked, rated or counted. Six shows in an order, and the order is not an argument about which is better.
- Nothing in the rig flashes or strobes, at any dial setting. A venue is exactly the kind of room that would grow a lighting effect, and this street settled that question in the punk club: a light that can put somebody on the floor has no business in a room anybody is meant to enjoy. The rocks glow steadily or not at all.
- You are allowed to sit down and you are allowed to leave. There is no standing, no queue and no crowd here, which is the one thing a web page can genuinely offer that the real venue cannot — and the reason a room like this is worth having on a Disabled people’s site rather than being a poster of somewhere most of us would struggle to get round.
Whose this all is
The real venue is Red Rocks Amphitheatre, an open-air amphitheatre near Morrison, Colorado, about ten miles south-west of Denver, owned and operated by the city of Denver. It is formed by two enormous sandstone monoliths — they have names: Ship Rock and Creation Rock, with the smaller Stage Rock between them — and it seats 9,525. Read off Wikipedia’s article on it on 2026-09-22. Every recording on this page was made there.
Looming Rocks is not Red Rocks. It is a room on a made-up street that is extremely fond of the real place — our executive director goes whenever she can — and Stimpunks has no connection to the venue, is not endorsed by it, and is not describing it. The amphitheatre in Colorado is a real thing that belongs to a city; this one is a room on a street that rearranges itself for whoever turns up.
None of these artists, their labels or the channels hosting these recordings is affiliated with Stimpunks, and none of them endorses us. The full running order with channels and links is in the liner notes.
Job marker — a flood lamp at the foot of the rock
You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.
The job: What the rocks give back
Before the code: The rocks at Looming Rocks glow under the UV floods, and the room is careful that the stone itself is not what glows. What is?
Hint 1
It is not the stone and it is not paint. It is alive, and it is growing on the rock.
Hint 2
It is the thing a walker would call a crust or a patch on a boulder.
Last hint
Fungus and alga living as one organism.
Give me the answer
The answer is The lichen. The lichen. Many lichens fluoresce under ultraviolet light — they take light you cannot see and give back light you can — and it is a real technique for telling species apart in the field. The rig, the solar array and the sentient rocks are this street's invention; the fluorescence is not. The room separates those two halves in the same paragraph, and its tool refuses to name any particular species, because nobody here has checked which one glows what and a confident Latin name beside a colour is the format most likely to be believed.
Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.
Quest code: FLUORESCE
That is the one.
